How To Prepare A Winning Job Description
Job Descriptions Introduce Your Company
A job description is more than a description of an open position. It is a potential employee’s first impression of your company. An effective job description can help candidates understand what it’s like to work at your company and encourage them to apply. When preparing a job description it is important to remember the old clichĂ©: “You never get a second chance to make a first impression”. Here are some tips to help you prepare winning job descriptions.
Use The Test Of Reversal
Think about what there is about your company that will make it attractive to candidates. Include a description of your company’s culture, advantages, and “perks” in your job descriptions. Add positive feedback from recent hires. These specifics help you connect with the top-performers you want to hire.
Why Is This A Great Job?
Prepare a brief narrative and bullet points highlighting responsibilities and challenges that will help candidates visualize why the job that you are describing is a rewarding position. Most candidates are concerned about opportunities for personal growth and advancement, so discuss where the job can take them professionally.
Requirements
Frequently, employers “ask for the moon” in job descriptions. Don’t fall into that trap. List only requirements that have been proven to correlate with success for the job and your company, rather than anecdotal information. Include skills, experience and cultural requirements, i.e. attitude, behavior, professionalism, and enthusiasm. If the job description is for a new position, divide your criteria into two sections: Required and preferred.
Keep Your Job Descriptions Updated
Job requirements and companies change with time, so review and update your job descriptions on a regular basis.
