Recruiting In The 2017 Job Market

Most U.S. economic signals point to another year in which recruiting top talent will be a challenge as the economy continues on its track of steady growth in 2017. For example, according to The Bureau of Labor Statistics the U.S. economy added 227,000 jobs in January, 2017. This was the 76th consecutive month of positive job growth, which is the longest on record. As the financial picture continues to improve, the number of jobs being added to the economy will continue to increase. In addition the unemployment rate will continue to remain low. Although the unemployment rate increased from 4.7% to 4.8% in January, it was the 16th consecutive month that the rate has been at 5% or lower. As the total number of available jobs increases and unemployment remains low, the pool of job seekers is shrinking. One of the major results of these trends is that millions of jobs will continue to go unfilled, increasing competition among employers to hire qualified candidates.

Another result of the above mentioned economic trends is that employers should be prepared to increase compensation for new and current employees, especially for new hires. Although the average increase in compensation for 2017 is projected to be 3.1%, the wage premium for changing jobs will be much higher.  According to Andrew Chamberlain, Chief Economist for Glassdoor, employees who change jobs for more money can expect a 10-20% increase in salary. Also, as the competition for employees heats up, there will be more of an emphasis on recruiting passive candidates, i.e. employees who are not looking for a new job. This will require that employers place increased reliance on professional recruiting firms.
