Recruiting Tips From CNI Recruiting
Recruitment And Stress
Recruitment can be very stressful for Hiring Managers and HR staffs. One of the best ways to reduce “recruitment stress” is to use the right tools. The recruiting teams at CNI Recruiting and our subsidiary Best Recruiting are pleased to offer the following suggestions for the preparation and use of effective recruiting tools.
Job descriptions are more than a list of job specifics and requirements. They are an opportunity for you to introduce candidates to your company and encourage them to join your team. When preparing job descriptions include company characteristics that will attract candidates, i.e. team-oriented work environment, management that listens to employee suggestions, availability of good schools, and etc. Add positive comments from recent hires and customers, company awards, employee perks and other attributes that will encourage candidates to join your team. You want your company to be at the top of the candidate’s list when you are ready to make a job offer, so make sure that you communicate your company’s advantages.
When preparing the job description requirements section, don’t fall into the trap of “asking for the moon”. Include only key requirements that have been proven to correlate with success rather than anecdotal information or an unreasonable wish list. Be sure to clearly identify required and preferred criteria.
Prepare a questionnaire that covers all of your key requirements and use it for phone, video and in-person interviews. Check off each requirement as you discuss it to avoid duplication and omission.
Honor Your Requirements
Consider only candidates who meet all of your key requirements. Don’t spend time on a candidate who excels in one key area but is lacking in another. You are much better off waiting to find a candidate who is the right fit than expecting someone to grow into what you want h/h to be. Hiring the wrong candidate can be an expensive and frustrating experience.
Compensation is not always the deciding factor for candidates, however, it is always key. Know what your competition is paying and be competitive. When you find a qualified candidate, offer what h/s is worth. If you don’t, you have created an opportunity for your competition. One of the worst recruiting situations is a candidate who leaves for a better offer after a few months.
Treat Your Candidates Like Customers
Good candidates are hard to find. Don’t lose a good candidate by being late for an interview, failing to meet a commitment, interrupting an interview for a phone call or not giving a candidate your full attention during an interview.
Recruit For Your “Bench”
Always be recruiting, even when you don’t have any open positions. Identify candidates through your network, when you travel, etc. When you have contacted a qualified candidate, explain that you don’t have an open position, but you would like to stay in touch until you do.
Many Hiring Managers do not attempt to maximize the benefits of reference checking because most references won’t make negative comments about candidates. However, if you ask probing questions and listen carefully to the responses reference checking can be a valuable component of candidate evaluation.
